What is Tax on Winnings?

In India, every Lottery Sambad prize is classified as income from other sources and attracts a flat 30% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) under Section 194B of the Income Tax Act, 1961. A mandatory 4% Health and Education Cess is levied on that base amount, making the effective deduction 31.2%. This rate is fixed, it does not shift with your income slab and cannot be offset by 80C investments, HRA, or any standard deduction.

The TDS threshold is ₹10,000 per individual prize. Prizes at or below ₹10,000 are paid in full. Any single prize above ₹10,000, including Lottery Sambad's first prize of ₹1 crore, triggers the full 31.2% cut before disbursement. Winners whose total annual income exceeds ₹50 lakh face an additional 10% surcharge on the tax amount, pushing the real deduction past 34%.

Tax on Winnings on Mobile

The prize-paying lottery authority deducts TDS before handing over any amount, no mobile app changes that. However, PhonePe, Google Pay, and BHIM UPI are now commonly used to receive transferred prize funds from licensed agents or to pay the stamp duty and processing fees required before collection. These apps generate timestamped payment records that serve as supporting documentation when you file your ITR.

If a lottery-related credit above ₹10,000 hits your bank account, it gets flagged under Section 285BA reporting. Verify the corresponding TDS on your Form 26AS via incometax.gov.in, the deduction posted by the lottery office typically appears within 30 days. Download that PDF on your phone alongside a photo of your winning ticket; both are essential if the Income Tax Department raises an assessment query later.

Tax on Winnings Common Questions

Do I pay tax on a ₹9,000 Lottery Sambad second prize? No, that amount falls below the ₹10,000 TDS threshold and is paid in full. Can I claim a refund if my income is below the basic exemption limit? No. Section 194B prizes are taxed at a flat rate; the basic exemption does not apply to lottery winnings. Can I split the prize with family to reduce TDS? The TDS is deducted on the full prize at source; personal splits afterwards do not lower the deduction at the point of payment.

Lottery Sambad tickets also carry 28% GST embedded in the ticket price at the point of sale. This is entirely separate from the income-tax TDS on your prize, you are effectively taxed at two distinct stages: once when you buy the ticket and again when you collect a prize above ₹10,000.

How Tax on Winnings Works

When you present a winning Lottery Sambad ticket at an authorised counter, the agent calculates 31.2% of the gross prize and remits that amount directly to the government before paying you the net balance. You receive a TDS certificate (Form 16A) as proof of the deduction. This certificate, issued quarterly, must be matched against your Form 26AS when you file your annual ITR-1 or ITR-2 under the head "Income from Other Sources."

There is no difference in tax treatment based on draw time or ticket series.
